My family Doctor put me on a strict calorie-reduction diet when I was in the 6th grade.
I remember the embarrassment of having to order skim milk from the ‘Milk Truck’ while my friends all enjoyed their chocolate milk.
At a very early age I could recite the calorie count in every bite of food I ate.
The struggle to keep my weight at a ‘healthy’ number became the focus of my life, joining Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, Susan Powter, any fad diet that came along.
It was exhausting and with all the yoyo dieting, I didn’t do my metabolism any favours; I was certainly not in the best of health.
It took years of being stuck in this loop for me to realize something had to give.
As I approached 60, I saw people older than me who were fit and healthy.
Others seemed tired, bored, lazy and ailing, not able to do simple physical activity.

I took a ‘23AndMe’ DNA test to determine what type of foods I should be eating for my genetic type.
The results showed that I would perform best eating a vegetarian diet, with no fat and very little dairy.
